Moby Dick, or, the Card Game

Already we are boldly launched upon the deep; but soon we shall be lost in its unshored, harbourless immensities. Ere that come to pass; ere the Pequod’s weedy hull rolls side by side with the barnacled hulls of the leviathan; at the outset it is but well to attend to a matter almost indispensable to a thorough appreciative understanding of the more special leviathanic revelations and allusions of all sorts which are to follow.  — Cetology

This compendium is comprised of a series of entries on the cards and mechanics of Moby Dick, or, The Card Game. In it you will find longer excerpts from the text, followed by brief descriptions as to how and why this or that particular card exists, and its deeper significance in the the structure of both the game and the novel. Our task ultimately was to adapt this monumental work of literature into game mechanics—to engender the same feelings one has when reading the book when one is playing this game. The views expressed here are those solely of Joel Clark, creative director at King Post. He wishes to thank Andy Kopas, Tavit Geudelekian, Mark Perloff, John Kauderer, Havarah Zawoluk, John L. Bryant, Geoffrey Sanborn, and Tim Clark for their advice and commentary on the creation of this document. He hopes that through dialogue with scholars and lovers of the book alike, this compendium will grow and be refined to better suit the magnificence of the source text.
